Pest Alert / Updates   October - November 2003

Asian cycad scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui) activity is high in the Okeechobee area. Learn about the latest research on managing this pest from Dr.  Catherine Mannion by clicking on the photo of this scale insect:

To control the “Cycad Scale” apply OrganocideTM foliar sprays at a rate of 2 ozs. per gallon water.  Be sure that spray covers all plant surfaces – leaves, stems and any visible parts of the roots.  Repeat every 3 weeks, and continue for a 12-week period.  When reinfestation occurs, repeat this application.  For basic care of Sago Palms see our Okeechobee Newspaper article, USE CARE WITH SAGOS.

Cuban laurel thrips This year, we have seen an unusual and heavy movement of Cuban laurel thrips into Ficus benjamina nursery crops.  It is the first time our DPI inspectors and experienced growers have seen this problem.  Wintergreen and other cultivars have been damaged in Palm Beach County.  The Extension Agent in Broward County has shared with me that they are also seeing heavy thrips damage on F. benjamina in their nurseries.  DPI Entomology Circular #59 is on-line at http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/~pi/enpp/ento/entcirc/Entcirc59.pdf   It lists F. benjamina as a possible host when the insects become “abundant.”  [Note: it lists obsolete insecticidal control measures.] You may want to be on the lookout for the problem – let me know if you detect unusual activity.
