Arbor Day in Okeechobee

In 2004, The Okeechobee County Extension Service helped the 2nd and 3rd grade students of North Elementary School celebrate Arbor Day on April 2nd by planting a Live oak tree on their campus.

The tree was provided by the Florida Nurserymen & Growers Association, North Lake Growers, Inc,  and by the Okeechobee Co. Extension Service.

The Tree was dedicated by the 3rd grade class in memory of Diedre Dunson.  They hung a wind chime from her tree, and will be reminded of her whenever students use the playground at North Elementary School

Cub Scouts presented the colors, students selected and read several poems, and learned how to plant a tree from UF/IFAS County Horticulture Agent Dan Culbert.  Mr. Culbert also shared one of his favorite Arbor Day poems:

Trees, by Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see

A poem as lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest

Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree

Students were invited to write a story about "My tree friend".  Some of these stories will be posted on this webpage and added to the school's  Neighborhood Tree Book which is kept in the school's library.
