2006 UF Poinsettia Field Day 

The Department of Environmental Horticulture holds a Field Day for nursery growers and the public to highlight new poinsettia varieties, production and marketing ideas of this popular holiday plant.  All photos were take by Dan Culbert, Okeechobee County Horticulture Agent.

Barbara Ecke (left) is a  forerunner of  the commercial Poinsettia cultivars in use today.

Colored Poinsettias  

Poinsettias normally grow in various shades of white, pink, and red.  Other colors of the rainbow came from a spray bottle.  Here are some examples, and a look at the materials used to create these novelty florist crops:

Field Day visitors get to tell the growers which one of these colorful creations they like the best

A spray bottle (above) is used to apply flower color.  

    If the dye gets on your hand (above), it may take a few days to get it off!

New Holiday Crops

Besides poinsettias,  plant breeders  also share some new kinds of holiday plants for consumers and growers to take a look at. Here are some poinsettia alternatives that you may see in the future:

Euphorbia "Diamond Frost" is a poinsettia relative that gives a snowy look to a potted Christmas plant.

Anigozanthos Kanga™ Red & Green, aka "Reindeer Paws". Unfortunately, the plants on display  at the field day had already dropped their brilliant red flowers.  Try this site for a look at the fuzzy flowers of Reindeer Paws: Dave's Garden.
