Barnyard Buddies

By: Janet McKenna

The Barnyard Buddies had our April meeting on Saturday, April 10th at Okee-Tantie Park . What a beautiful day it was! We held our business meeting, discussed our end of the year party, and recognized all participants of the OYLS.  After the business meeting, the Barnyard Buddies picked up trash in the park. We will be giving awards for the team who picked up the largest volume of trash and also to the team with the heaviest bag.

On Saturday, May 8th we will be having our end of the year party at H.L. Bishop Park in Lake Placid on Lake June starting at 10am . We can stay as long as we want (probably until 2pm ). This park has a very nice beach, playground, bathrooms and changing rooms. Be sure to bring your bathing suit, towel, water toys, floats etc. We may have a boat available to pull a tube or “boogie board”! The club will be providing pizza for all members in attendance. We may also be cooking hotdogs.

Directions: from Okeechobee, take Hwy 70 west to US Hwy 27, turn right (North), go thru the town of Lake Placid , under the overpass and over the railroad tracks to County Road 621- turn left (West). Go about 2 miles and the park will be on the right.  If you live North of town, you may want to take Hwy 98to Hwy 27, turn left and go 2 miles to County Road 621-turn right about 2 miles. If anyone needs a ride, please call Mrs. McKenna @ 357-1019 after 5pm . See ya there!!!

Chobee Cattle Kids

By: Marcia Candler

Chobee Cattle Kids held our April meeting on the 14th at the Extension Office. We discussed the following important dates for May:

v   OYLS Desert Social- Friday, May 21st @ 7Pm in the OHS cafeteria (remember your buyer’s plaque if you sold)

v   Record Books are due- Monday, May 24th by 5pm to the Extension Office.

Your project is not considered complete unless you turn in your record book. Please get them in on time so you can receive the recognition you deserve.

We also discussed sending thank you letters for the add-ons you received at the Okeechobee Youth Livestock Show. This is something important that is sometimes over looked. Our program for our April meeting was on animal health and proper injection techniques. We learned how to tell sick animals from healthy ones, about the different types of injections and how to properly give them. Then we practiced giving injections on oranges.

Our end of the year party will be a cookout and swimming at the Candler House on Sunday, May 23 at 1pm . If you need information call Mrs. Candler at 467-9029.

Your 4-H Story

Your 4-H story is a very important part of your record book. It should convey to your readers what you have learned by participating in 4-H.

The following outline may help you in developing your story:

Part 2              Tell about the project or activity- Why did you choose this project? Which goals did you set? What goals did you reach? What have you learned from this project? Describe how you arranged for financing, losses and savings.

Part 3              Highlight other 4-H projects and activities- include major learning experiences and special interests in 4-H.

Part 4              Explain how 4-H has helped you become a better leader and citizen. Describe the offices you have held and committee assignments you have accepted. Explain how you have learned to accept responsibilities.

Part 5              Describe how 4-H has influenced your school and career goals. Tell about your plans for the future.
