FSA AssistanceDr. Sand,
I attended a listening session in Tampa yesterday with secretary Ann Veneman. I went with Jim Handley, Sid Sumner, and Larry Bennett and we listened to what may be coming as far as federal assistance for livestock producers. We also, as a group, tried to express to her that the cattlemen in Central Florida have a desperate need for assistance. I would like the other agents to know what I heard yesterday.
1. Currently there is no funding in federal assistance programs for livestock/dairy producers
2. There is some money that will possibly be approved but in all actuality it will be several months before any money hits the ground here in Florida.
3. The current funding for agriculture is the section 32 funds. This includes citrus, vegetable growers, and ornamentals, but livestock and dairy producers do not qualify to sign up for section 32 funds.
4. The USDA is looking at several different programs that may be an option for livestock/dairy programs.
The main idea that I would like for all livestock agents to be aware of is that when producers call asking about what type of programs are available for these guys, the answer is call their local FSA office and get on the list for federal assistance. Also tell producers that it is very important that they document all work and time for hurricane clean-up as well as take lots and lots of pictures and keep all receipts. Over documentation is the key, so when the programs do come available it will make the process easier. I would appreciate your help on this matter.
