Pond Appeal: Enhancing the Beauty of Your Pond or Lake

Okeechobee County is rapidly growing in population. This rapidly population growth is mostly from non-native Floridians, relocated to this area from places where the environment is very different.  Many new residents are not aware of the interactions between people and the Florida environment.

An educational workshop entitled Pond Appeal is being offered throughout the Treasure Coast.  Sponsored by the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the local program will be held on  Thursday, August 25 from 1 – 3 PM at the Okeechobee County Extension office located at 458 Hwy 98, North here in Okeechobee, Florida.

The goal of the course is to teach participants the best ways to maintain healthy Florida ponds.  This workshop will cover issues such as pond construction design, aquatic plants, water loving insects, landscaping around the pond, pond permits, and how ponds affect property values.

Pre-registration is required by August 22. Call the Extension Service at (863) 763-6469 to sign up for this informative workshop. For additional information about this Pond Appeal program, contact Dan Culbert , Extension Horticulture Agent, at the same phone number.

This seminar will be offered from 6-8 PM on Thursday August 11th in Sebastian (Indian River County) and also from 9-11 AM on August 18th in Fort Pierce (St. Lucie County).  Extension programs are open to all people without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, or national origin.

Please help us get the word out to our community about this workshop. A list of the topics and speakers is available at our office or on-line.  For more information on pond management see our Okeechobee web page, http://okeechobee.ifas.ufl.edu or email us at okeechobee@ifas.ufl.edu .
